Can I ask you something? What is the breed of this dog? I ask that because, as you know (extra adrenal nonchromaffin) paragangliomas of the heart (also called aortic body tumors and chemodectomas) have been seen more frequently in the brachiocephalic breeds of dogs (Bulldogs, Boxers, and Boston terriers). In these brachiocephalic dogs, the high frequency of chemodectomas may be caused by their partially obstructed air passages and by a genetic factor too (it has been suggested that the chronic hypoxia status associated with the upper respiratory tract anatomic conformation of these canine breeds would overstimulate the chemoreceptor organs causing hyperplasia and therefore an increased incidence of this neoplasia). Chemodectomas in man have familial predispositions too, and, similarly, it has been reported more often in people living in mountain areas. A good differential in this particular case that you posted would be ectopic thyroid tumors (like thyroid carcinomas for example) which can be located at the base of the heart of dogs too just like the one that is depicted in the image.
